You just need a browser.

*** Download the update file first from the MOTU website ***

NOTE: This looks like a lot of instructions but I’m just including other information in case other instructions have been confusing. It’s actually a VERY simple procedure. Read through it first so you understand.

If you start MOTU Discovery and click Firmware you can see the current firmware. The file you just downloaded should have a newer number.

If you start the MOTU Discovery program then click on your device to open the setup page you should see a banner telling you there is new firmware available.

In my case, although the page did show a New Firmware Available banner on my screen, it did NOT have a “More Info” so I couldn’t click it to get to the button o browse for the file so I suggest this simple method instead.

The instructions I found seemed to suggest that you need to connect an ethernet cable directly from the computer to the Ultralite but this was incorrect.

Short note in case you did this and need this information, otherwise skip it: If you need to confirm that the device has a valid IP push the 2 knob (beside the display) to show the menu, then go to network you can see the device IP. If it is 169.254.* that will not work. That is a self-set IP because it cannot get an IP from the DHCP server (because there isn’t one!). But none of this is really necessary if you do it this other way:

Plug one end of the ethernet cable in to the Ultralite and plug the other end into a port on your router to get the device on your network, hopefully the same network your computer is on.

You do not need to unplug the USB cable (as many instructions incorrectly say).

Now you need to restart the Ultralite in Update Mode:

Turn Ultralite off (Hold the power button until the 3 second countdown ends)

Push and hold the power button to turn it back on but also hold the menu select button (Push and hold knob 2, right beside the display). It will immediately show a different display and say something like “Update Mode”. You can let go of them once the display shows that.

Give it a little time and it will show a local IP like 192.168.1.*

Start MOTU discovery and click on the device to open the update page, or just enter the IP in a browser URL bar.

Now a different page should appear instantly with simple update buttons. If it doesn’t then maybe your computer is not on the same network as the device.

Click Choose File first and choose the firmware file you downloaded.

Then click update and let it update the device. It will take around 6-7 minutes.

The device will shut down and there will be a message on the screen telling you that and asking you to restart it.

Restart it.

Click on Firmware Updater in MOTU Discovery and it should show the new firmware (it’s in the filename you downloaded).

That’s it. Done! I did find that my computer volume somehow got turned down to 0 so you might have to check that before you hear any sound.

To Update MOTU Ultralite-AVB firmware- The REAL instructions!!
